we continue the orb’s sin in space remix ep series with a third volume focussing on the duo’s latest full-length, the highly acclaimed cow / chill out, world! alex cortex delivering the heat!! mr cortex is kicking hard with a direct and mental techno tracks! oscillon, a1, is a bleepy affair, direct and repetitive, but please, play it loud and watch. rheometric is in the same alley as oscillon but bringing the bleeps and glitches trip even more in your face. combined with the fat but quirky bassline, it does the peak time techno thing extremely well. b1 s title -shear wave- does the track justice. backed by a fat downtempo beat, the distorted 303-reminiscent synth line cuts through the mix in a way that s impossible to ignore. strain rate tensor rounds up the previous three cuts, also in a very dancefloor-friendly manner. bubbly main lead and anxiety-inducing pad sneaking in the background seem to be the main thing, until another synth hits you as a counterpoint and flips everything upside down. proper no-nonsens stuff!!

power station continue to present their penchant for dark dance club sounds as the third edition of the kris baha-led imprint looks to another melbourne local by way of lochlan denholm aka disrute. after surfacing on the labels sampler debut just last year, reflexivity sees lochlan a chance to explore his style of twisted, pulsing homage to new wave and motorik throb. anvil landing wastes no time laying down intentions. sparse friendly drums are met with a modulating bass line and lazy arpeggio, an incessant sonar pulses and drum rolls intensify. snorkel continues the mid-tempo intensity, distressed kick counterpoint with aggressive stabs that rise and swirl before reaching a powerful climax, a track reminiscent of the 2000 s turbo-charged italo disco edits. on the flip we see japanese supergroup mascaras, made up of chida and 5ive (cos/mes) tackle unreleased kabutops. vocal fans of disrute s kabu track from the label sampler, here mascaras provide a fast paced acid-heavy reinterpretation, intense yet restrained with erratic drum trickery taking disrute to techno territory. finally, disrute reflects with title track reflexivity. digital arpeggios and a brooding one note bass work around curt cress style harmonic drums, a low slung piece for the early evening. hand drawn picture sleeve and label, a complete package that signals exciting times for power station ahead.

love notes from brooklyn offers up this platter from a very exciting new brooklyn artist, subtenant. as it says on the tin, the artisanal acid ep is heavy on the 303 squelches and emotional content. each track has a unique pairing of soul and heavy acid funk. evergeen soul is the clear lead track here, using a female snippet to keep this otherwise tough little number dancefloor friendly. this track is then reworked by detroit underground darling, d marc cantu, who pitches things up into funky rave territory. the flip side sees the title track feature the most soulful chords on the entire record, and then on the b2 the artist himself takes to the mic on know how it feels. this whole ep feels live and direct from the brooklyn underground.

portland based producer strategy is back on endless flight. strategy have been released from kranky, 100%silk, further records and name a few. we always enjoy his unique house music and ambient stuff. this new ep contains four killer low-fi house stuffs. it’s probably his most club friendly record.

discodromos ever-essential cocktail d amore label launches into action once more with the ear candy of komodo in tow. magic hour manages to work classic piano house tropes into a suitably cosmic headspace that s loaded with reverb and all things trippy, but its relatively grounded compared to the exotic meditation that the backwoods manage to conjure up on their oriental dub of the track. lizard dance channels early trance vibes to great effect in a celebration of early 90s rave mysticism and then sand dunes offers up a bubbling, friendly twist on acid house. using familiar tropes but still maintaining originality, from start to finish this is a classically rooted record with something to say.

having previously turned out some refined club tracks for friendly neighbourhood label banoffee pies, christian jay comes to idle hands for his debut solo 12inch. as revealed in our past support of artists such as i.a. bericochea and matt karmil, an appreciation of the finer end of the minimal house and techno spectrum weighs heavy at idle hands hq, and christian embodies everything good about the micro-genre. the stylistic approach on this single is consistent across both tracks, fusing shuffling, 2-step fuelled drum patterns with blissful atmospheric content in a most natural of ways. on 117 this manifests in a more flamboyant end result peppered with playful hi-hat tones and delicate melodic licks, while on contrail the mood is resolutely low-end focused with some choice bass touches in amongst the tightly wound funk of the beat. what makes jay s efforts stand out is their immersive finish, using dexterous doses of dub processing to create a quintessentially bristolian mood while retaining the razor-sharp edges of upfront european minimal. its a tone that speaks to limbering up at the start of the party, or shaking down deep into the morning. that said, we could listen to this all day and night.

the eleventh release on romb is a wild yet beautiful mini compilation, combining detroit and chicago vibes with uk breakbeats and a dash of melancholic electronica: a generous ep with dj friendly tracks that will also work perfectly at home. the a-side starts off with a detroit flavored acid house groover by new artist almost automatic, followed by solarity, a stormy, break-ridden dance stepper with an epic feel. on the flipside sean dixon, well-known from releases on clone and rawax as well as his own final chapter imprint, delivers a clean-cut italo infused chicago house gem. the ep ends with a beautiful, melodic down-tempo synth journey by daniel savio. all in all a diverse and playful ep with old-school vibes, yet with fresh twists and turns. limited to 200 copies only, this is a gem not to be missed.
